Alma
Bilingual Patient Service Representative - Swope Health Services, Wyandotte

Alma I found out about this position from a friend. I was nervous at first when I applied since I hadn’t done this type of job before, but I knew that I liked to help others. That’s what attracted me to this job. I find satisfaction in working for an organization that reaches out to the community. We have so many types of people--patients and employees, of all different races and cultures. I enjoy speaking both English and Spanish to our patients in the office, on the phone and at health fairs. People are so appreciative when I can communicate to them in their own language. It makes me feel valued.

Since working here, I have learned so much about healthcare and I have improved my overall communication skills. Swope Health Services, Wyandotte is a great place to come to each day because all the people I work with make it feel like it’s your home. That is really important to me. When you really care about people, and want to help others, Swope Health Services is the place you should work.

Jerome
Community Safety Initiative Coordinator - Swope Community Builders

JeromeAs the Community Safety Initiative Coordinator, I work with the community: residents, faith-based institutions, business owners and the police department to help address persistent crime and safety issues. A few years ago, I was a KCMO police officer working the Metro Division just off 63rd Street and I recently celebrated my one year anniversary with Swope Community Builders.

Swope Community Builders is a unique organization. As a Community Development Corporation, we do more than just build affordable housing or commercial development. We take a holistic approach to community development and have programs that encourage action and empowerment.

My particular position deals with organizing others collectively to reduce persistent crime. I help to empower the community and help them find resources. Hopefully, the residents will in turn use the power they have within themselves and begin to make changes on their own. Basically I’m trying to work myself out of a job.

People gravitate to where they see success. We will keep doing what we do as there are amazing things on the horizon. Swope Community Enterprises and Swope Community Builders set a standard, not only with our leadership but the front-line employees.

If you are people oriented and want to make a difference by creating safer neighborhoods and more vibrant communities, then contact us today. The value of those achievements surpasses any house that we build.

Swope Health Services is a great organization. Being part of providing healthcare to people who otherwise would not have it is very rewarding. Whether you are someone seeing patients, answering the phones or work in the business office like I do all of these positions are important. No matter what job you are doing there is a sense of satisfaction and purpose at Swope Health Services.

Melissa
Cost Accountant - Swope Community Enterprise Services

MelissaI found my job with Swope Health Services last summer. My husband and I were looking to relocate to Kansas City after college graduation. The whole experience has been great from day one. My job gives me a sense of helping people, not many other accounting positions have that benefit.

As an accountant I knew I’d be sitting in an office or cubicle, crunching numbers, sitting at a computer. At Swope Health Services, I can walk around in the clinic and see patients come and go every day. I know that the budgets I prepare will in turn provide funding for people to get healthcare. It’s good to know a child can come in to get their eyes checked, get their glasses and be able to see the chalk board at school.

Trudy
Intake Specialist, Outreach Department - Swope Health Services

TrudyMy career with Swope Health Services began back in 1990. Right now I am an In-Take Specialist in the Outreach Department; I meet, greet and welcome patients with the warm words “Sweet Pea.” Over the years I have also been a Receptionist, Medical Assistant and Patient Services Representative for different departments at the main health center. Regardless, of my role, I always have the same satisfaction of helping others. I like to go the extra mile to help both patients and staff. The health center associates voted me Employee of the Year in 1995.

I've always been drawn back to Outreach which provides comprehensive care for the homeless: everything from showers and clothing, to HIV testing, medical care, and case management. We have people that go to the shelters, find people on the street, literally look under bridges and let them know the resources we have available for them. It's truly a group effort. Swope Health Services provides very high quality healthcare and complete services for all of our patients.

What has kept me here for 15 years is making a difference in the community, the opportunity to continue learning, and being respected as a professional. My passion is helping people; I take special pride in helping the most underserved. When a patient leaves here smiling, then you know you've made an impact on their life. And I myself always have a smile at work as well as when I go home to my second job -- two wonderful daughters, a cat and a fish.
