Applied Urban Research Institute

Overview

Applied Urban Research Institute Incorporated in 1994, the Applied Urban Research Institute (AURI) was formed in response to a call among community leaders in Kansas City for greater collaboration and comprehensive strategies to address reinvestment needs in urban core communities. It focused initially on public policy issues, and strategic and master planning services to community groups in Kansas City. Today, AURI has joined Swope Community Builders as an essential intermediary that jumpstarts community action around the country. The Planning division of Swope Community Builders provides a comprehensive approach integrating urban planning, financial assistance and project management for non-profit and for-profit developers, municipalities and residents committed to revitalizing once vibrant neighborhoods.

Kansas City Engine for Economic Development (KCEED)

The Applied Urban Research Institute’s - Kansas City Engine for Economic Development (KCEED) Loan Program targets federal funds strategically to promote effective community development through a revolving loan fund. The purpose of the loan program is to provide targeted loans for development projects with potential for significant initial and secondary development impact in targeted areas of the Kansas City region. KCEED funds urban redevelopment real estate projects at the stage where obtaining conventional loans is typically most difficult – predevelopment.

As of March 2007 the $2.1 million loan pool has leveraged $38.34 million in public and private funding and will result in 234 units of housing and 71,000 square feet of institutional and commercial space.
